Stone Benchtop - Kitchen
Stone benchtops are one of the first things buyers notice in a display home kitchen — and one of the most common points of difference between a builder's display and their standard package. Whether stone is included as standard, the thickness, and the brand all affect the real value.

What is it?
Stone benchtops are porcelain or natural stone (granite, marble) slabs used for kitchen bench surfaces, replacing the laminate that most builders include as standard. The key specifications are the material (porcelain or natural stone), the thickness (20mm or 40mm), the edge profile, and whether the stone extends to splashbacks and the island. Note: engineered stone benchtops are banned in Australia from 1 July 2024.
Why buyers compare it
- Stone benchtops can add $3,000–$15,000+ to the kitchen cost
- Display home kitchens almost always show upgraded stone, not the standard laminate
- The thickness (20mm vs 40mm) dramatically affects both cost and appearance
- Some builders include 20mm stone as standard in upper-tier packages
Is it worth upgrading?

Compare My Build Tip
Ask whether the 40mm stone is a solid 40mm slab or a 20mm slab with a built-up edge (a 20mm top with a 20mm strip glued underneath to create the appearance of 40mm). The built-up edge is far cheaper and looks almost identical — but some builders charge close to solid 40mm pricing for it.
