EV Charger
An EV charger is a future-proofing inclusion that's becoming increasingly relevant as electric vehicle adoption grows. Whether a builder includes EV charging wiring, a full charger, or nothing at all can affect both convenience and the future value of your home.

What is it?
An EV charger (electric vehicle charging point) is a dedicated high-amperage electrical circuit and charging unit installed in the garage or carport. A full installation includes a dedicated circuit breaker, heavy-duty wiring, and the charging unit itself. 'EV ready' means the wiring and circuit are installed but the charging unit is not — you add the charger later. Standard builds typically include no EV provision at all.
Why buyers compare it
- Retrofitting an EV charger post-build requires new electrical circuits through finished walls
- Pre-wiring during construction is far cheaper than retrofitting later
- An EV charger adds future resale value as electric vehicle adoption increases
- Some builders include EV wiring as standard; others exclude it entirely
Is it worth upgrading?
Questions to Ask Your Builder

$0

Dedicated circuit and wiring — add the charger unit later

Installed charging unit with dedicated circuit — ready to charge
Compare My Build Tip
Even if you don't own an EV yet, include at least the EV-ready wiring (dedicated circuit to the garage) during the build. Running a high-amperage circuit through finished plaster and walls post-handover costs 3–4 times more than during construction — and EV adoption is only increasing, making this a smart future-proofing investment.
